*Song* – ‘Staying Awake’

Hi everyone!  Here’s a lil song I wrote a while back called ‘Staying Awake’.  Just re-listened to an old voice memo and thought I’d do a fresh recording of it.

It’s just a song about someone choosing to stay when times are rough…

Lyrics:

My true love
I’m right here
You don’t have to be afraid
I’ll hold you close
I’ll hold you tight
I won’t ever run away

The sun in your eyes always burns with the new day
I could look into them forever, so I won’t sleep

My true love
Have no fear
Nothing can hurt you while I’m here
So you can rest your head
And close your eyes
I’ll still be here when the morning comes

The pain you feel, I feel it too
I would take it away forever if you’d like me to
I would stay by your side forever if you want me to

Staying awake for you now
I’m staying awake for you now
Rest your head upon my chest
I will be here till the end
Staying awake for you now
Staying awake for you now
You don’t need to say the words
In the quiet, they are heard

I’m staying awake
Staying awake for you
I’m staying awake
I’m staying awake

*Song* – ‘Waiting’ For My Real Life To Begin’ (Live cover)

I find it absolutely crazy to think that it’s been over six years since I performed this cover of ‘Waitin’ For My Real Life To Begin’ by Colin Hay at Westhill Academy (apologies for the rough sound quality).

It was during a school concert night, a couple of weeks after I’d performed it at the ‘Westhill Academy Young Musician of the Year’, and somehow won the senior musician competition!  I  remember being super, super under-prepared for the competition, just picking this song because I’d been jamming it out in my bedroom the night before.

I think it was an important moment for me: it gave me a big boost in confidence, after a few years of thinking that maybe playing and making music wasn’t really something I was meant to be good at.  Certainly looking back now I think it helped push me on a bit to become a better musician, and consequentially a better worship leader (which is something that is so, so important to me today).

I think about the song often too.  A lot of the time it’s because I’m in the middle of a ‘Scrubs’ re-watch, and the episode with the song in it hits me right in the feels every time!  I love the words and the story it tells, but I think what really gets me is the question of: when will your ‘real life’ begin?  As for me, I don’t want to have to wait for it.  I want it to start right now!!

I got a chance to see Colin Hay perform it live in Aberdeen a wee while back.  So good!

Song lyrics:

Any minute now, my ship is coming in
I’ll keep checking the horizon
I’ll stand on the bow, feel the waves come crashing
Come crashing down down down, on me

And you say, be still my love
Open up your heart
Let the light shine in
But don’t you understand
I already have a plan
I’m waiting for my real life to begin

When I awoke today, suddenly nothing happened
But in my dreams, I slew the dragon
And down this beaten path, up this cobbled lane
I’m walking in my old footsteps, once again

And you say, just be here now
Forget about the past, your mask is wearing thin
Just let me throw one more dice
I know that I can win
I’m waiting for my real life to begin

Any minute now, my ship is coming in
I’ll keep checking the horizon
And I’ll check my machine, there’s sure to be that call
It’s gonna happen soon, soon, oh so very soon
It’s just that times are lean

And you say, be still my love
Open up your heart, let the light shine
Don’t you understand
I already have a plan
I’m waiting for my real life to begin

On a clear day I can see, see for a long way

*Song* – ‘Hard Times’ (Live cover)

I’ve really enjoyed trying to get better at playing the piano over the past couple of years, and even in the last few months I can tell that I’ve gotten noticeably better, which is a pretty cool feeling.

(I mean, I’m not saying that I’m now an absolute pro or anything: but it’s always fun to notice that you’re getting better at something you enjoy!)

Here’s a super chill cover of ‘Hard Times’ by Paramore.  Recorded it yesterday at our ‘Friday Night Live’ WCC Youth night just to see how it sounded, and was pretty happy with it!

Hope you think it’s alright too! (:

*Song* – ‘Thorns/Flourish’

Over the past couple of weeks I’ve been experimenting with a little piano part, and out of it came this song.  I’ve called it ‘Thorns/Flourish’.

It’s really just a song of hope: a prayer for you (and me) to hold onto hope, even when bad thoughts and feeling are trying to drag us down and take over us.

You can always have hope.

Lyrics:

My head’s the place I hide away
When my eyes can’t believe what they have seen.
My head’s the place I make a home,
Where seeds that I have planted grow
And bear no fruit that I can eat but
Thorns which wrap around my feet,
But…

Hold on my dear;
You can flourish even now.
Hold fast to hope.
Thorns can make a golden crown.
A golden crown.

So take your time; it’s what you do.
I will be waiting right here
‘Til you say ‘yes’ to yourself,
Believing you were made the best,
And you’ll grown a new heart,
One that thorns can’t tear apart…

Hold on my dear;
You can flourish even now.
Hold fast to hope.
Thorns can make a golden crown.
A golden crown.

Hold on my dear;
You can flourish even now.
Hold fast to hope.
Thorns can make a golden crown.
